Sunset over mangroves of the delta river Sine-Saloum - Toubakouta - Senegal
Senegal

The Sine-Saloum Delta lies in the heart of Senegal and is of great ecological and economic importance. The marvel of this delta is that it combines the character of a wetland, lake, marine, estuarine and marshland. Spanning an area of 300,000 ha, 60% of the delta is covered by mangroves. Its supports a variety of livelihood services and activities to the local communities such as fresh water, fishing, fuel wood, tourism, oyster collection and honey production.

The Sine-Saloum Delta is designated as a Biosphere Reserve, to promote (innovative approaches to) sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

With this project we intend to buffer the effects of climate change through the restoration of mangrove ecosystems. We also aim to generate income for local communities and improve their wellbeing...
