Ruins of the north transept at Lanercost Priory
England

Lanercost Priory is one of the best-preserved Augustinian monasteries in Cumbria. It was founded by Henry II in 1166 and endured a turbulent history. Located close to Hadrian’s Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the Anglo-Scottish wars, including one led in person by Robert the Bruce. It was also place where an ill King Edward I convalesced for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign.

The priory was supressed in 1536 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, although it still has an active church. The Priory Church of St Mary Magdalene occupies the original nave.
