Palac Gorkow, Archaeological Museum, Poznan, Poland
Poland
Museum of archaeology with ancient Egyptian exhibits, housed in palace dating from the 16th century. Gorka Palace - the present seat of the Museum, was established in the 1640s by the reconstruction of several Gothic tenement houses. To date, the early Renaissance portal of 1548 has survived from its original features and the interior courtyard with a columned cloister and two halls on the ground floor. The building was built by an unknown architect. The building has changed its destiny many times. Initially, until 1592, he was the seat of the Hill family of the coat of arms Lodz. In the years 1592-1595 he became the property of the Chancellor of Czarnkowski. From 1605 to 1828 it housed the seat of the Benedictine monastery. Between 1834 and 1880, the first high school in Poznan was run by the girls. During the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the building was transformed into a tenement house. This function kept until the end of World War II, when it was seriously destroyed. The palace was rebuilt only in 1958-67 and adapted to the seat of the Archaeological Museum.
