Matamorisca church
Northern Spain

The church of San Juan Bautista de Matamorisca is a rectangular building consisting of two naves separated by pillars. It was built in two phases in the middle of twelfth and early thirteenth centuries and then reformed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries till adopt its current appearance.

It houses a collection of late Gothic wall paintings arranged in panels.

Among them scenes of the Nativity and the life of St. Julian, the Crucifixion with the Virgin and St. John, a great representation of Judgement and San Miguel weighing souls.
It is likely that these paintings are related to the work of the so called Master of San Felices active during the last quarter of the fifteenth century in several temples in northern Palencia and southern Cantabria (Valberzoso, Olea, Las Henestrosas, San Cebrián de Muda or San Felices de Castillería).

In the epistle side there is a Romanesque baptism font decorated with two rows of arches.

Has undergone a restoration in 2008 as part of the Northern Romanesque Intervention Plan .

It is open to worship as a parish church.
