The Old Bridge of Heidelberg was once a wooden construction. The bridge is the northern main entrance to the old town. The medieval bridge gate is a part of the fortification. After the building of the stone bridge, the tower served as a prison guard house. In 1788, the pointed cone roofs of the gate towers were replaced by baroque helmet-shaped roofs.
