Summer Street Bridge 1
Boston

The Summer Street Bridge over the Fort Point Channel connects South Boston and Downtown Boston, Massachusetts. The bridge is nationally significant because it is the last surviving example of an electrically-operated, paired-leaf oblique retractile drawbridge. When it was operational, two parallel sections of the bridge, using a system of tracks and rollers, would roll back at an angle away from the road and river in opposite directions but on the same side of the river. It was built in1899 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company and is 502 Feet (153 Meters) in length.

The Fort Point Channel was an important commercial waterway for the City of Boston especially in colonial times. On its banks are located the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, a large US Postal Service facility and the Hood Milk Bottle ice cream stand and snack bar, which stands next to the Boston Children’s Museum and can be seen from the bridge on the South Boston side of the channel.
