This monastery dates from the Byzantine era. It was fouded in 1042 by the emperor Constantin IX and it was partially destroyed in 1881 by a deadly earthquake. It played a major role during the terrible Ottoman repression of 1822 and still contains the remains of monks and other persons who were seeking a shelter inside its walls.
It exhibits superb mosaics from the 11th century and is listed in the UNESCO world heritage.
