Begium-Gent-SintBaafsKathedraal
Belgium

The Sint Baafskathedraal is a cathedral in the Belgian city of Gent, the capital of the Province of Oost Vlaanderen. The majestic building that we can now admire has a century long construction history. Transmarus, Bishop of Doornik and Noyon was in this place in 942 and dedicated a church to Johannes de Doper. From the subsequent Romanesque church, which dates from the mid 12th century, visitors have found traces in the rich frescoed crypt. Gent, in the Middle Ages a rich and powerful city, could ever afford to build larger and richer churches. Thus, the Sint-Janskerk was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 15th and 16th century. Approximately in the middle of the 16th century, the building no later than the form which it still holds. But there were other changes afoot. After the Gent rebellion of 1539 included the ancient St. Bavo's Abbey lifted. The abbot and monks of the abbey was secularized and given the title of canon. Their chapter went on to St John's Church, St. Bavo as a new patron saint was. In 1559 the diocese of Gent was founded and the church was a cathedral. Among the long line of pastors of the diocese of Gent should certainly figure in the seventh Bishop Antonius Triest, mentioned. The rich baroque interior of the cathedral as we see now bears his powerful punch. In January 2006, a large-scale restoration has started.

More About Belgium

Belgium is a country in northwest Europe. Founding member of the European Union, it covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres and has a population of about 10.7 million. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, it was a prosperous centre of commerce and culture. Upon its independence, Belgium eagerly participated in the Industrial Revolution and, at the end of the nineteenth century, possessed several colonies in Africa. Today, Belgium's strongly globalized economy and its transportation infrastructure are integrated with the rest of Europe. Its location at the heart of a highly industrialized region helps made it 2007 the world's 15th largest trading nation. Cultural life is nowadays concentrated within each language community and a variety of barriers have made a shared cultural sphere less pronounced. Anyway, the region corresponding to today's Belgium has seen the flourishing of major artistic movements that have had tremendous influence on European art and culture.
