Australian Rules Football Memorial and Thomas Wills Monument
Victoria

The small township of Moyston is about 240 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Grampians region of Victoria. Explorer Major Thomas Mitchell travelled through the area in 1836 and squatters took up sheep runs shortly after followed by the gold rush in surrounding areas.

Thomas Wentworth Wills, son of an early squatter is believed to have founded Australian Rules Football in Moyston incorporating features of a game played by Aboriginals he grew up with. Wills who was cofounder of the Melbourne Football Club, captain of an early Richmond team and captain of the Geelong Football Club played an estimated 172 games.
