The road through the Schoellenen was for a long time the only way to reach the St. Gotthard pass to Italy. It was of great strategic importance, one reason why you can find old fortifications everywhere. Now a road and a railway tunnel take the majority of the traffic. You can see a ventilation tower of the road tunnel at the opposite side of the valley.
