Fox Permafrost Tunnel Extension Before Drilling
Alaska

These small survey stakes mark the entrance to an extension of the Fox Permafrost Tunnel before drilling began in spring 2011.  The original tunnel entrance is located to the left.  This extension is being drilled by scientists from CRREL to expose new regions of sub-surface permafrost and will connect with the original tunnel, where bones of mammoths and vegetation from the last ice age have been found.
