Vasco da Gama was born in Sines, perhaps in 1468, and died in India in December 1524, when he had only been viceroy for three months. He was the second son of Estêvão da Gama; the firstborn was Paulo da Gama, who accompanied his brother on the 1497-1499 trip to India and died near the end of his return, on Terceira Island.
