Het Atocha spoorwegstation werd geopend in 1851. Het was het eerste station in Madrid. Nadat het door een brand werd verwoest, is het in 1892 herbouwd. In 1992 is er achter het oude station een nieuw station gebouwd voor de AVE hogesnelheidslijn. Het oude gebouw is daarbij verbouwd tot nachtclub annex winkelcentrum en het herbergt een tropische binnentuin van 4000 vierkante meter.

Als je in de tuin staat, dan hoor je continu de stoompijpen sissen. De lucht is er enorm vochtig en warm. Aan de voorzijde van de tuin is een vijver met waterschildpadden.

Op 11 maart 2004 gingen 2 bommen af op de ondergrondse perrons. Terroristen, waarschijnlijk gelieerd aan El Qaeda doodden daarmee 192 reizigers.
