Eagle of Reus - Catalonia
Spain
The Eagle has been documented in Reus since 1627. It was owned by the town and had a very marked protocol role: it honored visitors with its dance and participated in the city's festive solemnities. From the War of Succession, the Eagle - as the heraldic symbol of the house of King Charles III, Archduke of Austria - acquired great importance for the people of Reus, who will make it appear in the ornamental motifs of the houses as sign of adherence to the Austrian cause. The triumph of Felipe V de Borbó meant the abandonment of the Àliga, which remained without leaving for many years and was physically assaulted by the butchers. Recovered without enthusiasm by the municipal authorities, from the Treaty of Peace of 1725, it seems that it did not come out until 1738. The current Eagle of Reus was made by the sculptor Manel Llauradó, following the style of traditional Catalan eagles, and was presented to society on June 27, 1996. It is currently owned by the city and is danced by members of Col·lectiu Reusenc d'Activitats Culturales - CRAC -, a group that proposed its reintroduction, together with Carrutxa. The tunes of his dance are the work of Jesús Ventura and the music is performed by a couplet formation. It leaves for Corpus Christi and the Feasts of Sant Pere and Misericordia. For Corpus Christi and Saint Peter we can see her carrying a dove in her beak, and for Mercy, a bouquet of flowers. Dance solemnly for Corpus Christi in front of the Priory of the Most Holy, for Sant Pere in front of the City Hall door - in honor of the authorities - and for Misericordia inside the Sanctuary honoring the Virgin Mary.
