广州三元宫是广州市最大的一座道教寺庙。它坐落于越秀山南麓，南临应元路，往前是中山纪念堂，北靠越秀山。 三元宫的前身因在城北之故，俗称作北庙。相传它是赵王庙，是为奉祀南越王赵佗而兴建的寺庙。据考古学家的推测，赵佗墓可能在越秀山越王台；而越王台则在观音山（孙中山纪念碑东面，镇海楼南部）上，它是南汉时的歌舞岗。北庙旧址在象岗，始建于汉武帝建元四年（公元前137年）前后。南越国灭亡后北庙渐废。 到了东晋时，南海太守鲍靓信奉道教，公元319年，他在原北庙旧址建造了越岗院，用于传授道家学说。当时，葛洪投其门下钻研道术，并娶其女鲍姑为妻。 到了唐代，越岗院曾一度更名为佛教的悟性寺。宋代又复称为北庙。 明代洪武年间，即1380年前后，广州扩展北城，凿象岗而建北门。时北庙正当门楼位置，于是庙迁至今址。
明万历年间（1573年至1619年）改建北庙，恢复道教面目，才更名为“三元宫”，沿用至今。
