Grass Trees are very slow growing plants which only grow about one metre over 100 years and can live for up to 600 years. The flower spear is a food source for nectar feeding birds, bees, ants and butterflies. For Aborigines who inhabited this area for thousands of years before European settlement, the grass trees were a staple plant providing food, drink, fibre and materials for making implements.
