Brougham Castle
England

Brougham Castle was built in the early 13th century using stone from the adjacent former Roman fort of Brocavum. The location, overlooking the confluence of two rivers, was ideal to guard strategic routes between England and Scotland through the mountainous Lake District. It also served as an imposing residence and welcomed a visit by King Edward I in 1300. The remains include an impressive gatehouse, keep and redoubt along with the remains of a curtain wall. The castle was in a ruined state by the mid-18th century and is today run by English Heritage.
