Il 4 maggio 1949 un aereo Fiat G212 andò a schiantarsi contro il retro della Basilica di Superga. Quella sera il tempo era orribile e la visibilità quasi nulla. L'aereo riportava a casa l'intera squadra del Torino F.C. (il "Grande Torino", vincitore degli ultimi 5 campionati consecutivi), reduce da Lisbona dove aveva giocato una partita amichevole contro il Benfica. Trentuno persone persero la vita nel disastro: l'intera squadra, i managers e accompagnatori, i membri dell'equipaggio e tre fra i migliori giornalisti sportivi italiani. I funerali furono seguiti da 500.000 persone. Il Grande Torino è stata una delle più grandi squadre di tutti i tempi.
