Piazza della Cisterna, San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy
Toscana

Piazza della Cisterna in San Gimignano, Tuscany<br />

This is one of the most remarkable villages in Tuscany. There are still 15 of originally 72 medieval towers, representing the power of the families. The Torre Grossa is the highest of these towers and reaches 54 meters. It was built in 1311. The wealth of the village came from a trade road which connected Rome with northern Italy and the cultivation of saffron. The Piazza della Cisterna is named after the well in its center and surrounded by medieval buildings. Since 1990 San Gimignano is recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage.

More About Toscana
