National Palace of Queluz, Corridor of Mangas
Lisbon
Corridor of Mangas. The name comes from the glass sleeves that protected the candles and it is presumed that they were kept here. It functioned as a corridor making the connection between the old palace of the Marqueses of Castelo Rodrigo, and the new palace. The tiles in the upper part, of great technical quality, date from 1784, form neoclassical polychrome panels attributed to the ceramic painter Francisco Jorge da Costa. They represent the four seasons, the four continents, scenes from classical mythology, and in the openings facing the garden, a "chinoiserie" decoration with oriental figures. Below the paneling, panels of blue and white tiles from 1764 painted by Manuel da Costa Rosado, represent hunting scenes.
