Karnak-Tempel - Great Hypostyle Hall #4
Luxor & Karnak

A total of 134 columns support the roof of this building, which was originally completely covered with sandstone blocks.

The two raised middle rows of columns differ from the lower rows of columns on the south and north side of the portico by their chapter forms.

While the pillars on the right and left side of the hall imitate a closed papyrus umbel, the natural model for the capitals of the two upper middle rows of columns is the open papyrus umbel. These pillars are nothing more than the imitation of plant stalks - as in the case of the Taharka Column in the First Great Court at the Ramses statue. The difference in height between the lower side aisles and the three raised naves was compensated for by external walls with window grilles.

More About Luxor & Karnak

Part of the Holy Land, Egypt offers a fascinating mixture of ancient pyramids, temples and other religious monuments. There are numerous possibilities to explore Egypt from desert treks to trips down the Nile or scuba diving in the Red Sea and along the Sinai coast. Cairo, which means “The Triumphant”, is home to the pyramids, sphinx and over 17 million residents within its metropolitan area. Luxor is often described as the world’s largest open air museum, built on the ancient city of Thebes. The Karnak temple complex, located near Luxor, is a collection of ancient temples, chapels and various other buildings.
