Jeronimos Monastery, Nave
Lisbon

The Church has a Latin cross plan, composed of three naves at the same height (Hallenkirche). Contrary to the proportions of the square section of Alcobaça 20x20m, and of 20x25 Batalha, here in Jerónimos the height of the rectangular section in height of 20x30m reigns that together with a slender structure of only 6 columns where the traditional Gothic arches (toral, perpianho or formeiro) that supported the cross vaults are absent, replaced here by a single low profile vault, flattened, a mixture between the vaults combados and abanico (used in England and northern Europe), and this whole set gives us a reading of a unified space, of a great hall, without the traditional heavy marking between the three naves of the Gothic of the Monasteries of Alcobaça or the Battle.

More About Lisbon

Capital, largest, and wealthiest city in Portugal and one of the leading economic centers on the Iberian Peninsula. Although located in the westernmost corner of Europe, the city is firmly embedded in the European Union, hosting a couple of EU agencies. Visit Baixa, the downtown city center and Alfama, the oldest district in the city or just chill out in one of Lisbon’s memorable parks – Parque Florestal de Monsanto, one of Europe’s largest urban parks or Parque Eduardo Vll, off the main drag. Last but not least, Lisbon plays host each September to the Lisbon Gay & Lesbian Film Festival - Queer Lisboa.
