A 120m aerial view overlooking the Zopkios Brake Check area near Coquihalla Summit, British Columbia. Highway 5 is a major freeway corridor linking Vancouver to Kamloops/Kelowna. It passes through the Cascade Mountains w/ good views of the granite faces of Yak Peak to the north & Needle Peak to the south. Along w/ a rest area, truck drivers often stop here doing brake checks before the steep grade that follows in either direction. Amazingly the speed limit through here is 120km/hr.
Alongside the highway & leaving a noticeable scar for many kilometres is the massive construction of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, a major oil pipeline connecting Edmonton, Alberta to Vancouver, BC. An existing pipeline has been carrying 300,000 barrels of oil/day since 1953 but this new installation when complete will increase that to 890,000. A statement from January 11, 2023 has reported that 700km of pipe were already in place representing 75% of the entire project. The pipeline has of course been met w/ backlash from environmentalists & First Nations.
