Wells Cathedral is located in the smallest city in England. It was built and expanded over several centuries between 1175 and 1490 and is the earliest English example of the Gothic style.
Apart from its iconic west front, the church features a unique set of 'scissor' strainer arches. These were added in 1338 to support the weight of a new spire on top of the central tower, without which the entire structure might have collapsed.
The cathedral also contains a 14th-century astronomical clock, which is thought to be the second oldest mechanical clock in Europe.

Wells is the second smallest cathedral city in England (after the City of London) and was founded in 1205. It is located at the foot of the Mendip Hills in Somerset. It was named after the fact that there are three wells in the city closely associated with the cathedral.
