Dovecotes are structures designed to house pigeons or doves. In the medieval period, they were often large, circular structures built of stone and topped with pointed roofs. The birds provided a source of food for the table, as well as feathers for the aristocratic household and manure for the estate.

Aberdour Castle is one of the oldest surviving stone-built castles in Scotland. It started out as a two-storey hall-house in the mid-1100s and was expanded over several centuries. It was a residence for three noble families, including a Regent of Scotland. The terraces, walled gardens and an orchard were added during the 16th century.
