Fox Permafrost Tunnel Extension 25m
Alaska

Drilling for the season was completed at about this depth into the new extension of the Fox Permafrost Tunnel.  Though progress was going great, scientists from CRREL were eager to begin construction of the entrance bulkhead which will protect the tunnel from the damaging heat of summer.  Here you can see that the tunnel has bored though a series of ice wedges, likely over 10,000 years old.
