The small town of Cowell, officially gazetted in 1880, is located 490 km northwest of Adelaide on the Eyre Peninsula. Cowell is a service centre for fishing, sheep, wheat and a jade industry. It is located on the 49 square kilometre big but shallow Franklin Harbour with a shoreline of mangroves and mud. The town is a popular place for fishing holidays, features a National Trust Folk Museum, 2 historic hotels and a Jade Factory.
