Chorro de Quevedo, Bogotá D.C.

Calle 13 with Carrera 2

The plaza del Chorro de Quevedo is a public place in Bogota where some historians claim that Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada founded the city in 1538. Located at 13 with race 2, in the historic city center, is framed by colonial buildings among which stands the Chapel of St. Michael the Prince, built in 1969 to the old image of the Calvary Chapel.

History

According to the chroniclers, the site where is located the Chorro de Quevedo was the place where the Muisca Zipa watched all the Sabana de Bogotá. In 1832 the site was acquired by the Augustinian Father Quevedo, who installed a public water source. The jet was maintained until 1896 when a wall collapsed which destroyed the source and some of the surrounding buildings. In 1969 the square was reconstructed based on some old pictures and models and installed a pool. By 1985 it was restored and provided with a wall with a few boxes and human figures on the north side. Today the square is frequented by tourists and is surrounded by cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops.
