View Guangji Gate on the ancient city wall 古城墙上观广济门
Guangdong Province
Guangjimen Gate Tower, also known as "Hanjiang Tower" and commonly known as "Dongmen Tower" among the people, is the most majestic and spectacular of the seven gates in the original ancient city of Chaozhou. It is not only the main symbol of the famous city of Chaozhou, but also an important gate of Beidi City Embankment in Chaozhou City. Guangji Tower was first built in the third year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1370). It has been repaired to varying degrees in the past dynasties, and it was rebuilt in the 20th year of the Republic of China (1931). Among the many towers on the ancient city wall, the Guangji Gate Tower is the most magnificent. The Guangji Gate Tower is a palace-style three-story attic on the top of a mountain. The outer gate originally had the slogan "To the East is a Thousand Spring". The building is placed on a tall and thick platform, with an arch opening in the middle, seven rooms wide and five rooms deep. The front and rear are supported by wooden and stone pillars, and they extend outside the city wall to become an arcade. The roof is paved with double-layered blue tiles, the eaves on each floor are inlaid with blue glazed hooks and dripping water, carved railings and painted buildings, surrounded by windows, flying pavilions and flowing eaves, making it majestic and spectacular. Climbing the tower and looking around, I saw the Han River flowing northward, the long bridge lying on the waves, and the distant mountains looking like black clouds. In summer and autumn, when the water rises and the tide is strong, the boat's sails are slightly fluttered and go down with the waves. Sometimes I see the waves of the river hitting the pier, sometimes I see the waves splashing on the shore, the painting is poetic and full of appreciation. There is a couplet in the building: "Ten thousand peaks stand in front of each house, and a stream of water connects the sky." This is the freehand brushwork of this landscape. In late spring in March, I climbed up to the tower and looked out. The Hanjiang River is swollen, the river is wide open, the long bridge is lying on the waves, the mist is vast, the peaks are picturesque, and the boats are moving like shuttles. It is a unique scene. Therefore, among the eight scenic spots in Chaozhou, "watching the tide from the east tower" is the best.
