Nea Moni (New Monastery, in Greek) was built during the 11th century. It is located on the Provateio Oros mount, 15 km from Chios town.
It contains superb mosaics which are well known examples of "Macedonian Renaissance" art in Greece. It also exposes relics from the Greek independance war during which many inhabitants of Chios were slaughtered there (1822).
