Herd Peak fire lookout (exterior)
California

View from the top of Herd Peak (elev. 7,071') in Klamath National Forest near Weed, California.  Mt. Shasta tops the southern skyline, as does Mt. Eddy to the southwest as well as other higher granite peaks of the Klamath Mountains.  To the northwest is the tip of Preston Peak & the Red Buttes, Mt. Ashland, & Pilot Rock.  Goosenest & Ball Mountain are immediately to the north & the Butte Valley to the northeast, as is the Medicine Lake Volcano.  The true summit is actually a bit north however this rocky outcropping has a fantastic view that a fire lookout was established here in 1933, now listed as a historic lookout.  The lookout is still manned every summer & this particular day we met Pamela from Dunsmuir who staffs this lookout five days a week while another individual named Bob does the other two days.  Pamela has been manning fire lookouts for 34 years & was very knowledgeable of the area, plus an entertaining storyteller.
