Boot Hill Cemetery, Tombstone, Arizona USA
Arizona
This is the world famous Boot Hill Cemetery of Tombstone, Arizona, “The Town to Tough to Die.” This is a real cemetery, not a fake tourist attraction. The Cemetery was started in 1878 on a hill just north and west of the present town of Tombstone. It is the final resting place for many of the town’s earliest pioneers. Tragically, many of the internments were due to the deceased having met a violent death. Where it has been possible, the original headstones have been verified and replaced with modern substitutes using city records and charts. The term “boot hill” refers to the fact that many of the original inhabitants both cowboys and miners died with their boots on. There are at least twenty-four other towns in the U.S. with boot hill cemeteries. Among those buried in Boot Hill are the three men killed at the famous gunfight at O.K. Corral.
