The Wimmera River originates in Mount Buangor State Park near Ararat and flows through grazing and cropping farmland before it drains into a series of terminal lakes north of Horsham. Although the river has a catchment of about 2.4 million hectares and many tributaries, its flow is intermittent and the terminal lakes Lake Hindmarsh and Lake Albacutya can run dry for many years.
Victoria is Australia's second smallest State and covers only 3% of Australia's land area but has the second highest population of all States and Territories. Victoria is located in the southeast of mainland Australia and includes the most southern point on mainland Australia at Wilsons Promontory National Park.
