Echuca Wharf, aerial image
Victoria
Echuca Wharf, a historic timber structure on the Murray River in Victoria, Australia, played a pivotal role in the region’s development. Built alongside the railway line connecting Echuca to Melbourne in 1864, the wharf helped establish the Port of Echuca as Victoria’s second-largest port, providing crucial access to Melbourne’s markets for the Murray-Darling Basin. Today, the wharf remains operational, catering to paddlesteamers for tourism. Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2007. A major restoration in 2015 saw much of the original timber replaced with locally milled Red Gum pylons, planks, and beams. The site is also protected under the Victorian Heritage Register and a Heritage Overlay.
