The ruins of Gylen Castle, Kerrera
Scotland

The picturesque ruins of Gylen Castle sit on a high rocky ridge on a promontory at the southern tip of the island of Kerrera. The 16th century four-storey tower house was build by Clan MacDougall to command the southern approaches to Oban, which at the time was an important maritime trade route.

Unfortunately, it was only occupied for around 65 years after being besieged and destroyed by Covenanters in 1647.
