The cloister at Ardfert Friary
Ireland

The ruins of this Franciscan friary, located near the important ecclesiastical medieval town of Ardfert, County Kerry, are as equally impressive as the nearby contemporary cathedral. The two share similar design features, such as the row of nine lancet windows.

It was founded in 1253 for Conventual Franciscan monks. The residential tower built at the west end of the friary church was added during the 15th century. During the Desmond rebellion the friars were evicted and the site fortified for use as a military barracks. It was subsequently taken over by the Protestant bishop of Ardfert.
