church of santiago1. caceres. spain

While there are documents that suggest that this church dates from the 12th century, the most ancient remains are from the 14th. In the 16th century, Gil de Hontañón took up the task of restoring the building. From this period are the high chapel, crowned by starred vaults, and the sacristy. When Hontañón abandoned the restoration project, Sancho de Cabrera took over the efforts, building a nave that he covered with ogive vaults. In the exterior, the most remarkable elements are the two portals, which end on a pointed arch, framed by an alfiz. Inside, the Alonso Berruguete's reredos stands out, as well as a gorgeous Renaissance grille made by Francisco Núñez and the carved images of the Christ of Miracles, Our Lady of Esclarecida and Jesus of Nazareth.
