Pasargadae liegt in 1.900 m Höhe im Zagrosgebirge auf einem Plateau in der Persis (Provinz Fars) und war die erste Residenz des Perserreichs unter den Achämeniden, etwa 130 km nordöstlich von Schiras. Pasargadae wurde von dessen erstem König Kyros II. bzw. von seinem Nachfolger Kambyses II. zwischen 559 v. Chr. und ca. 525 v. Chr. ausgebaut.Um 520 v. Chr. wurde die Residenz von Dareios I. etwa 43 km nach Südwesten verlegt, deren wiederhergestellte Reste unter dem griechischen Namen Persepolis weltweit bekannt sind.
