The birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, Linlithgow Palace
Scotland

The ruins of a once a majestic royal residence located on the route between Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle. Started in 1424, it was progressively expanded by several generations of Stewarts. With a name meaning ‘the loch in the damp hollow’, Linlithgow's quiet rural setting made it ideal as a royal nursery. It was the birthplace of James V in 1512, Mary Queen of Scots in 1542, and Princess Elizabeth in 1596.

It fell into decline when James VI moved the royal court to London in 1603, following his coronation as James I of England.
