Lake Wanapitei is located northeast of Sudbury, Ontario, however it is within the city limits of the Greater Sudbury region. This is from a small park at the extreme south end w/ cement barriers that had inscriptions from 1952 & 1953. When you look at a satellite view of the lake, the northern shore has a distinct circular appearance, to which the lake indeed occupies a former meteor impact crater that occurred 37 million years ago. It was confirmed in the mid-1970s by the presence of a rock called suevite, which contain bits of dark glass which are common around impact structures. The lake also occupies part of the Sudbury Basin, which itself was formed from a comet impact 1.849 billion years ago & today produces the world's largest nickel deposits. The Canadian Shield is an area of ancient bedrock, all of which were under large ice sheets during the Ice Age. Today many visible impact craters are still visible in the region from Saskatchewan to Quebec, almost all lake-filled.
