The Ironworks Ground is one of the two highest Football Association grounds in the UK, being approximately 1000 feet above sea level, and is exposed to the extremes of westerly winds and bad weather coming off the nearby North Pennine hills to the south west. It is possibly the only ground powered by a wind turbine. The pitch is maintained despite the unpredictable climate especially in winter months (the football season!). The benefit of the exposed position is the beautiful view across the Weardale valley, which is highlighted on this sunny summer day.
